Step 1: Daily Objective

Explain that today they will be learning about salsa dance and how to dance basic Cuban salsa steps.

Step 2: Question of the day

See if any students have learned how to dance. Hip-hop, ballet – formal lessons, or YouTube tutorial?  Was it a good or bad experience? Was it hard or easy? What kind of dance did they learn? Who taught them? Does anyone want to show off a dance move?

(If students haven’t had much experience with first-person past tense, you may want to give them a few words to get started. You could write them on the board and model them. Example: I learned, I tried to learn… )

 

Step 3: Twitter comments about Dabke

Explain that Dabke is a specific dance and there are some variations among different countries.

What do you think about Dabke? Tell them! 

Step 4: Dabke Dance Video

Show these men dancing dabke at this wedding.  

 

 

 

 

Then show this group that danced a variation of Dabke during their time on Arabs Got Talent.

 

  

 

Finally, play the Dabke tutorial and let students try to follow the steps.

 

Extension Ideas:

Have each student write 5 questions about dabke and take them to interview a native speaker. Share back tomorrow!
