    Prep:

    • Download and print a “Notes” and “Add Event”phones for each student. You can print them front/back.

Possible words/phrases that they will begin to recognize: cerfs-volants, festival, carte, lieu, (dates), début, fin, quand, où

    Step 1: Daily Objective

Introduce the daily objective. Today will be focused on understanding some basic information about the festivals.

    Step 2: Question

See if they know any festivals that are nearby. Suggestion: You should research ahead of time to see what kite festivals are near.

Look at the map. Are they surprised that there are this many festivals? This map only shows “large” festivals too. What’s the closest “large” festival to you?

Step 3: Introduce New Event Task

If someone wants to go to a festival, they need to know some basic information, right?

Give them the notes and event calendars.

On the notes side, see what they can figure out by asking some This/That questions in the TL. Does “beach” answer “where” or “when”? See if there are any words they can’t figure out.

Step 4: Input – Kites Festivals you don’t want to miss

Show the first video. You can talk over the video to point out different aspects. Click on any of the links to show more. Ask them questions about the videos and articles. See what they can get on their own too.

Now reference the “add event” handout. Let’s add this festival to our calendars! Walk them through filling it out. For place, put the city/country and add what type of place it is (park, beach, etc). If you can’t find the times, mark the “entire day” on it. In the last section, you can put a website URL and a simple description or any other details (largest in the world, # of participants, price, activities, performances, schedule of events, etc) in the “Notes” section.

Repeat these steps for the next festivals. You could keep walking through the information with them, or give them the links to do on their own/with a partner.

https://clearlakeiowa.com/events/color-the-wind/ This one is in English, so help them translate the important information to French. This will be useful because their research in the next step will probably be in English.

End by asking: Quel festival de cerfs-volants est le plus intéressant ? Parce que ?

Step 5: Kites Festival Poster (Analyzing Examples)

Take a look at the posters for the kite festival. Ask them what important information it has. Make a list with them. If they call out an answer in English, translate it when you write it on the board.

    Possible Answers:

    • Name of festival
    • Date
    • Location
    • Times (start/end)
    • Schedule of events
    • Special shows
    • Prices if applicable
    • What makes the festival unique
    • Photos or images
    • URLs/links

Step 6: Kites Festival Poster (Research & Design)

Assign each student a festival. Use the list above or assign a country (Flags) where they have to find the festivals.

Now they will make a poster to promote a festival in French. Remind them to include the important information to make people want to come.

Let them create it in any format: digital, hand-drawn, video/gif, for social media or to hang up, etc. Ideas: GoogleSlides, PowerPoint, Infographic (www.piktochart.com), or Padlet. For the videos, they can put the link or make a QR code (QR Stuff).

Set a time limit for them to complete this; otherwise, they may take more time than they should. Suggestion: 30 minutes or until the end of class. They could finish it as homework as well.

    Check for Learning

Ask a few questions about the festivals that they saw and let them use their “new events” page. This would be a good to do on white boards. This is a quick check to see if they can understand some of the new information.

    Examples:

Quand commence le Festival de … ?

Où est le Festival de… ?

    Quelle date ?

    Quelles activités ?

Extension Idea – I can give information about a kite festival.

Have them present the information about the kite festival they created a poster for: Small Group Presentations, PechaKucha Style, in small groups of 5 or less.

Option: Give them another “add event” sheet where they can add the information as they hear it when it’s being presented.

    Experiences Sheet

Remind them to be working on this if you are using it.
