This is a short introduction to the new unit that you can do after the previous unit’s assessment/reflection day or start class with it and immediately lead into the first lesson.

Prep:
□ Download the “Objectives Sheet,” “Unit Vocabulary Sheet” and “Experiences Sheet” from the main unit page. Copy for each person (can be front/back).
□ Optional: Props and realia to help with comprehension throughout the unit.

Introduce Unit

Play the video. Summer is coming!

Now ask:

What’s your main objective for the summer? What are your plans?

See what they can do without notes (this is an informal pre-assessment).

Song – Vivir mi vida

Before playing, tell them that this song has your “summer motto” to represent what is your main objective for the summer. See if they they can figure it out.

Play the song.

Show the chorus lyrics. Can they figure out your “summer motto?” Live your life!

Identify Themes

Show the list of different themes in songs. Which themes are in the song?

Identify Supporting Details

Give them the link or a print out of the lyrics.

What phrases support the themes that they selected?

Opinion / Summer Motto

Wrap this up by asking their opinion of the song and if it applies to their life or maybe it could be the theme song for their summer. 🙂 Let them look for a song or come up with their own “summer motto.”

Extension:

They could fill out “review” form.

They could find another song that would be their “summer theme song” and explain why (the theme, related phrases, their opinion, etc).

Essential Question

Introduce the essential questions for the unit. Try to explain in simplified target language using props or show it in English. See what they already think. Options: Start a journal (written or video). Give them time to reflect back after lessons.

Unit Objectives

Note: Click the image to change the size.

Ask what they think they will need to learn to be able to understand and talk about summer plans. Make a list of what they say.

Pass out the Objective Sheet for this unit to students. Have them circle their proficiency goal at the bottom. Refer back to the rubric if needed.

If you want to do a pre-assessment, they could try to do each of the objectives.

Experiences/Homework

This is choice board for homework that the students work on during the unit. These are adapted to match different multiple intelligences and give students choices. We find that this creates a homework that students end up enjoying and spend more time on. This also can be a “When you are finished” activity for students that are finished early.

Give them the experiences sheet. Go over the options. See if they have any other ideas that would connect with the 5 C’s (community, cultures, communication, connections, comparisons). Explain how, how many, and when to turn it in. Also explain guidelines for the “Your Option” like does it need to be approved first.

TIPS:

Make it clear to them how to prove it like screen shot, printed out or just show on device.

Set how many they need to complete.

You may want them to get permission for their “your idea.”

Non-tech Modifications

Use a magazine or newspaper in target language (from a library or your collection), photo copy the page so he can highlight. Or print one from the internet for him. If he can’t use a camera, just get a parent’s signature

Use our tweet sheet or just let it be on plain paper instead of Twitter/Social Media.

Info can be found in a book from library, or you could supply printed articles.

Vocabulary

This is a way for students to organize the vocabulary that they learn each day.

Extension Ideas:

  • Give them a pre-assessment to see their strengths and areas for growth
  • Connect with other content teachers
  • Arrange for a guest speaker to visit
